Discover Loei Province

5 Days / 4 Nights

Discover Loei Province located in remote Northeast Thailand. The Northeast is often referred to the nation's heartland by Thai people. Generally poorer than the rest of the country, this is where much of the nation's rice and other staple crops are grown. The region has a specific regional cuisine which is quite distinct from the central Thai food you will find in most western Thai restaurants. The region is near the heart of the old Khmer kingdom and many ruins can be found all around the region.

Welcome to Northeast Thailand – the Heart of the Kingdom of Smile!

We start our journey driving through a peaceful and green landscape. We will will make our first stop at Suan Hin Pha Ngam (3h drive, 160kms), also known as little Kunming of Loei – and for good reasons! The beautiful karst formations are easily spotted from afar and together with a local guide you embark on a walk to see the rock formations up close. On the top you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the area. If you don’t want to walk down, local tractors are waiting to bring people down to the starting point.

After this we continue to Huai Krating artificial water reservoir (80kms, about 1.5h drive). Offering breathtaking views which are accented by a bamboo forest and evergreen mountains, the artificial lake is famous among locals for its floating rafts – an ideal place for a picnic lunch followed by a refreshing swim!

We continue our journey and head to Chiang Khan, our final destination for the day (70kms, about 1.5h drive). We will make one last quick stop at Thai Dam Cultural Center. The Thai Dam people, or Black Thai, migrated from China and have settled in several neighboring countries over the centuries and have a very distinct culture and language.

Over the past years, domestic tourism has transformed Chiang Khan into a cozy town with many nicely decorated cafes and restaurants. A vibrant night market makes this the perfect little town to stock up on some unique local souvenirs. Enjoy a nice dinner and some drinks overlooking the Mekong river and Laos at the other side.

Check-in to your hotel with the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 3. Chiang Khan (B/-/-)

Chiang Khan holds several important traditions. The best-known tradition is the merit-making ceremony in the early morning when monks leave their temples on their daily rounds to receive alms. Another tradition, unique to Chiang Khan is called Pha Sat Loy Khro, which is very similar to the national tradition of Loy Krathong. This square-shaped offering is made from only degradable elements like banana leafs, banana trunks and decorations made from bee wax. Releasing the Pha Sat is a way of releasing all the bad luck from your life.

After breakfast, you will make and decorate your own Pha Sat under the close guidance of a few Chiang Khan aunties that are more than happy to pass down this local tradition. After finishing the Pha Sat it’s time to release it on the Mekong river. Now nothing can go wrong during your journey in Thailand anymore!

Day 4. Chiang Khan – Rural Cycling Trip - Loei (B/L/-)

After breakfast, we drive to Wang Saphung Town (80kms, about 1.5h drive), the starting place of an easy-going bike trip in the area. You will get a good feel of local life and along the way you stop several times to meet local people and learn more about their daily life. For example, the weaving community that preserves a long tradition, but foremost serves as center to exchange the latest gossip in the village! After the bike ride you enjoy a well deserved lunch at Sirila eco farm where many ingredients come straight from their own land.

We then continue back to Loei (26kms, about 30min drive) to visit Wat Neramit and the Phi Ta Khon Museum before transferring to your hotel.

Day 5. Loei – Phitsanulok (B/-/-)

Continue your journey through the northeast! First drive to the east along a beautiful, winding road to Phu Hin Rongkla National Park (150kms, about 2.5h drive). Apart from its unique natural landscape, Phu Hin Rongkla is also known as a communist stronghold and hiding place in the 70’s, a part of Thai history unknown to many. You can take a beautiful walk with a ranger along a trail that introduces you to the different rock formations together with the political history of the place. The view point at the bizarre rock formations of Lan Hin Taek allow you to enjoy the beautiful view over the national park.

We then drive to our final destination – Phitsanulok (120kms, about 2h drive). On arrival, visit Wat Yai (Phra Si Ratana). This temple holds the Phra Buddha Chinnarat, one of the most important Buddha statues in the country and is an important pilgrimage site for Thai people from all over the country.
