According to Devotees Haridwar is one of the places (other three being Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad), upon which the Amrit (Nectar) of immortality emerging out of the churning of ocean fell. This is manifested in two great events that take place in Haridwar, the memorable and huge religious Mela - Kumbh Mela (fair) which happens once every twelve years and the Ardh Kumbh Mela, which comes once every six years. The scenic beauty and the lush green surrounding forests, a unique Gurukul system of traditional education, still followed in some institutions here, the temples and the ghats, a huge number of Ashrams and Dharmashalas; all give the city a unique flavor and charm.
