SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Day 1. Arrive Guatemala (-/-/-)

Welcome to Guatemala. Your guide and driver will meet you at the airport for your transfer to your hotel in Guatemala City. Guatemala City is the fourth capital of Guatemala, founded after the city of Santiago de los Caballeros was destroyed by an earthquake in 1,773. Today Guatemala City has a population of nearly 4 million. “Guate”, as locals call it, is the country’s most modern city and is where you’ll find most museums, restaurants, bars and cafes.

Day 2. Transfer to Coban & Visit to Biotopo del Quetzal Natural Reserve (B/-/-)

After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Coban. En route, you will visit the Biotopo in which you'll be able to walk through the trails and if you're lucky, watch a real Quetzal! One of Guatemala's most beautiful nature reserves and sanctuary of the National bird, Quetzal. Starting from the visitors centre there are 2 trails, a short one (2km) and a long one (4km). The trails are well maintained and will take you through the cloud forest filled with all sort of mosses, ferns and orchids. Both trails pass by creeks and a waterfall. This "Biotopo del Quetzal" is a popular spot for environmental education since its run by the National University of San Carlos. After the visit, continue to Coban.

Coban sits between evergreen forests and coffee studded mountains, making an excellent gateway for exploring nearby natural attractions. Its surroundings are an important gourmet coffee growing centre and also produce cardamom and allspice for export.

Day 3. Semuc Champey (B/L/-)

An early transfer will take you to Semuc Champey. One of the most beautiful wonders of nature in the country.

Semuc Champey is formed by what is known as a natural land bridge of 500 metres, which forms the backbone for the descending series of pools and small waterfalls that make up Semuc Champey. The water that fills the pools is the product of runoff from the Rio Cahabon, churning as it plunges into an underground chasm from where it reemerges downstream at the end of this massive limestone overpass. Its warm very humid subtropical forest characteristics favour a wide variety of vegetation and tree canopies. Swim along the pools and walk uphill to the viewpoint and be amazed by this natural site. Enjoy a day at leisure at Semuc and in the afternoon, you'll be transferred back to the hotel.

Day 4. Orchid & Chirripeco Farm (B/L/-)

After breakfast, your guide will meet you at the lobby of the hotel for your transfer to an orchid natural reserve. On arrival, your local guide will walk you through the trails where you will be able to observe hundreds of different orchid species as well as medicinal plants and a butterfly house. After the tour, transfer to town for lunch at a local venue. After lunch, you'll be transferred to the Chirripeco tea farm. This tea is one of a kind and its only harvested in this part of the country. On this tour, you'll learn about the plantation process, visit the museum and continue with tea tasting. After the tour, transfer back to the hotel.

Day 5. Waterfall visit & Transfer to Rio Dulce (B/-/-)

After breakfast, your guide will meet you at the lobby of the hotel for your transfer to Rio Dulce. En route you'll visit one of the tallest waterfalls in Central America. Walk uphill through the trails and across the cloud forest all the way to the waterfall. After the visit, transfer to Rio Dulce. Rio Dulce is a navigable river which begins in Lake Izabal and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Rio Dulce has become an ideal destination to navigate due to the magical journey through the canyon which was part of the route of commerce of the Mayas. It has a fantastic view when browsing through the cliffs over 300 feet high covered with tropical vegetation.

Day 6. Rio Dulce Canyon Tour (B/L/-)

After breakfast, a private boat will pick you up at the hotel's dock. You'll navigate through the canyon to visit the floating gardens, the local cooperative Ak' Tenamit and Livingston. While navigating the Rio Dulce (sweet river) you will cross through "El Golfete", the wider are of the river in which the Chocon Machaca park and the floating gardens are located. Along the way you will also stop at Ak'Tenamit, a local cooperative that has been able to assist the village in the education and medical services through sustainable methods. Between "El Golfete" and Livingstone, starts an impressive canyon with walls of jungle and limestone. The tour ends at Livingston, Livingston is only town in Guatemala in which the Garifunas settled in the 1,800s. It has a unique ambience that you won't find anywhere else in the country. Laid-back and relaxed, Livingston will remind you more of a Caribbean island than of Latin America. Enjoy a wonderful Caribbean style lunch in Livingston. After the tour, transfer back to the hotel.

Day 7. Transfer to Peten & Yaxha Sunset (B/-/-)

After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Peten. Lunch is not included but will be held en route. On arrival, you'll be transferred to Yaxha Archaeological site for a magical sunset. Ixpanpajul is the perfect destination for adventure and adrenaline fanatics; it has different zip line circuits where biodiversity can be admired during day or night, the park can also be explored horseback riding and over the 5 majestic suspension bridges. Besides enjoying incredible views of the jungle and Lake Peten Itzá, the park also supports and promotes different conservation and development projects for the community.
