Maya Jungle and Beach

10 Days / 9 Nights

Venture inland to explore the Che Chem Ha pottery caves and tour the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich. Stay two nights at Cahal Pech Village Resort and explore the Belizean town of San Ignacio in the Cayo District.  Continue with an adventure at Bocawina Rainforest Resort. This eco-lodge is located inside the 7000 acre Mayflower Bocawina National Park and adjacent to the world famous 10000 acre Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve.  You will have four days at our unique eco-lodge in this remote jungle setting, and the opportunity to hand pick your daily adventures!

After your time in the rainforest, you will travel to the picturesque Placencia Peninsula on the Caribbean Coast of Southern Belize.  You will stay at a beach resort hotel, with plenty of time to swim, snorkel and enjoy this laid back area.  The sixteen mile Placencia Peninsula boasts the only golden sand beach on mainland Belize.  Placencia is a small Creole fishing village with wooden houses on stilts, and offers interesting shopping, dining and nightlife.

Our itineraries are suggestions and are fully customisable according to your needs, interests and budget.

Treat these itineraries as inspiration and one of our experts will create your uniquely tailored holiday with your requests in mind so that you can truly experience Belize with Seven Senses.

Day 1. Welcome to Belize. Transfer to San Ignacio – Cayo (-/-/D)

Arrive at Belize International Airport, where you are met and transferred to the town of San Ignacio. Before arriving at our hotel we explore the famous San Ignacio market, and stroll the pedestrian-only Burns Avenue.  We follow a meandering road up to Cahal Pech Village Resort – a picturesque lodge with a grand vista overlooking the town of San Ignacio and the rolling hills of Western Belize.  This is an ideal starting point for the adventure that awaits.

Day 2. Mayan cave hike & Xunantunich ruins, with evening to explore San Ignacio (B/L/-)

A full day of adventure and exploration. Our first mission is to explore the underground geology and archaeology of the Che Chem Ha cave system.  We hike through the rainforest and up into a multi-chambered series of caves rich with geological formations, ancient ceremonial altars, Mayan artifacts and relics.  After an hour and a half in the cave, we continue to a spectacular setting overlooking the Macal River Valley where lunch is served. The next adventure is the ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich.  We cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry to ruins which are situated on the banks of the river. Here, we travel back through centuries to the ancient world of kings, temples, plazas and ball courts of this Maya city. In the evening, choose to stroll into San Ignacio town, meet the local people and enjoy dinner.

Day 3. From San Ignacio to the Rainforests of Mayflower Bocawina National Park (B/L/D)

We wake up to a cup of coffee, grab our binoculars, and make a short walk to the Maya Ruins of Cahal Pech, a stone’s throw from the lodge.  Birds and wildlife abound, mornings are the most active, and we spend an hour touring the ruins and looking for wildlife. After breakfast you will be transferred to Bocawina Rainforest Resort, a true eco-resort in the middle of Mayflower Bocawina National Park.   The lodge is powered by an array of solar panels and a seasonal small-scale hydroelectric generating station.  Upon arrival, after a special orientation, you will have time to settle into the lodge and learn about the experiences that lie ahead in the surrounding mountains and rainforest.  This itinerary gives you flexibility to pick from an extensive range of activities and excursions available on-site, off-site and within the national park.  You can customize them to suit your activity level and interests.  Consider starting off with the Rainforest Canopy Zip-line – an exhilarating ride with eight runs and a rappel!

Days 4-6. Rainforest Activities & Exploration (B/L/D)

Waking up to the sounds of the tropical jungle is a pure delight, with the chatter of parrots and parakeets flying overhead, the fresh morning air scented with tropical blossoms, and the expectation of an exciting adventure-filled day ahead.  After breakfast, you will embark on your selected tour for the day.  Try a guided Bocawina rainforest trail walk, hiking along bush trails as you discover local birds, wildlife, leading to waterfalls and unexcavated Mayan ruins.  Your guides will point out the diversity that make tropical rainforests such a rewarding biological experience. There are also many great off-site adventures to choose from: Descend into the Mayan archeological site of Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave –the most popular caving expedition in Belize.  Alternately, cruise along the wildlife-rich Monkey River with a stop at Placencia for lunch and shopping. Four Bocawina Activities and Excursions are included in this package.  These can be selected in advance during trip planning, or upon arrival at the lodge.

Day 7. From Mayflower Bocawina National Park to the Beach Resort of Placencia (B/-/-)

Your last morning at Bocawina is completely flexible.  You can stay close to the lodge or follow a trail to a favorite pool or waterfall.  We can transfer you to Placencia right after breakfast, or drop you off later in the day.  The choice is yours! Upon arrival at your beach hotel, you may want to settle into your room before enjoying a refreshing welcome drink. Later, why not take an exploratory walk along the uncrowded palm-lined beaches of the Peninsula?  The Peninsula is only a mile at its widest and is positioned between the Placencia Lagoon on the west, and the Caribbean Sea on the east. It is possible to stroll north seven miles from Placencia Village to Seine Bight Village without interruption.  We have left your time at Placencia totally open….lounge poolside, hop on a bicycle or sign up for an optional excursion at the hotel activity desk.  Meals can be enjoyed at your resort hotel, or you can sample some local cuisine in the nearby villages of Placencia and Seine Bight.

Days 8-9. Placencia Beach Activities & Exploration (-/-/-)

Spend the next two days discovering the Placencia Peninsula.  Relax in a hammock with a good book, go beachcombing…or consider salt water fly fishing or a sunset cruise.  Check out Placencia Village and its myriad of shops, restaurants and bars, then head over to Seine Bight Village for some traditional Garifuna music.

Days 10. Departure (-/-/-)

Enjoy a barefoot walk along the beach to watch the sunrise.  This last day is yours to enjoy at your leisure before you fly home or continue on your travels.  Your trip ends in Placencia, and the hotel provides a shuttle service to Placencia Airstrip. Please let us know if you would like assistance with a flight from Placencia to Belize International Airport to connect with your flight home.
