Orangutan Tour and Trekking in South Borneo

12 Days / 11 Nights

Visit a rehabilitation center for the new ex-captive orangutans. Trek into the rainforest for a possible sighting of wild orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and birds. Observe the Proboscis Monkeys on Kaget Island, then go trekking and bamboo rafting in South Borneo jungles.

Day 1. Arrive Pangkalan Bun, Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia (-/-/-)

On arrival at Pangkalan Bun airport your guide will meet you and transfer you to your accommodation.

The rest of the day is free to relax.

Day 2. Pangkalan Bun - Kumai (B/L/D)

In the morning we will take you to Kumai to board your boat. The boat is a traditional Klotok wooden river boat with a roof which forms the upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. The guide's team includes the boatman, a cook and expert guide. In the peaceful afternoon we will slowly explore the quiet river by the klotok while observing the monkeys along the riverside. Dinner on the boat and overnight on your klotok boat or lodge depending on your choice.

Day 3. Orangutan Exploration (B/L/D)

After breakfast travel up river for about 2 hours and then up a side creek to Camp Leakey where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest. En route stop at Pondok Tanguy, the rehabilitation center for the new ex-captive orangutans. At Camp Leakey you will have opportunity to trek into the rain forest with your expert guide and the forestry rangers to appreciate the flora as well as perhaps sighting wild orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and birds. Lunch provided on boat. Afternoon visit the feeding station to see rehabilitated orangutans being fed. We will then sail back down the river for overnight on the klotok boat or your chosen lodge.

Day 4. Pangkalan Bun - Banjarmasin (B/-/-)

After breakfast take a boat to Kumai then transfer by car to Pangkalan Bun airport to catch your flight to

Banjarmasin. Upon arrival at Banjarmasin transfer to your hotel. Free time at your leisure.

Day 5. Banjarmasin - Kaget Island - Banjarmasin (B/-/-)

In the morning after breakfast you will meet your guide then visit Kaget Island to observe the Proboscis Monkeys. Then in the afternoon transfer to your hotel, afternoon free at leisure.


Day 6. Banjarmasin - Meratus Mountain (B/L/D)

Early in the morning, transfer to Kiyo village for a short sightseeing. Afterwards, we will be trekking on Meratus mountain crossing hills, forests, shifting cultivation, etc. Lunch will be served en route. Dinner and overnight in tent.

Day 7. Datar Ali - Jumantir (B/L/D)

After breakfast, we will be trekking to Sungai Karuh waterfall and explore the vegetation and animals on our trail. Next, we will be hiking to Jumantir crossing dense primary forest. In the evening, we will learn from the Dayak man how to set up an animal trap. Lunch will be served en route. Dinner and overnight in tent at the riverside.

Day 8. Jumantir - Mount Besar Peak (B/L/D)

After breakfast, we will be trekking uphill through mossy trees and orchids to reach the peak of mount Besar, the roof of South Borneo where we can see beautiful panoramas of Borneo's dense jungle from above. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight in a tent at the peak.

Day 9. Mount Besar - Katuan (B/L/D)

After packing up our stuff, we will trek down to Katuan. Lunch will be served en route,

dinner and overnight in tent at the riverside.

Day 10. Katuan - Haratai (B/L/D)

Proceed to Haratai Waterfall crossing primary rainforest, beautiful valleys, hills, and shifting cultivation.

Afterwards, continue trekking to Haratai village. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight in a longhouse.

Day 11. Haratai - Loksado - Kandangan - Banjarmasin (B/L/-)

Breakfast at the camp site / local house, then walk to Loksado, then wrap your camera and other valuable into a plastic bag because you will go bamboo rafting wading through the Amandit River and having fun on the stream after the trekking. The bamboo rafting will take about 4 hours to Bubuih Village, then you walk to Muara Kandihin to get a car for Kandangan. Have lunch at a local restaurant in Kandangan then return to Banjarmasin. Transfer to hotel.

Day 12. Banjarmasin - Floating Market - Departure (B/-/-)

Very early in the morning, we visit the floating market at Lok Baintan, about 1 hr boat ride. The one at Lok

Baintan is more visited by sellers and buyers compare to the one at Barito. So we will visit the one at Lok Baintan. 

Return to hotel for breakfast then at the appropriate time transfer to the airport to catch your flight towards the UK.
