Day 1. Arrive Phuket (-/-/-)
Welcome to Southern Thailand!
Upon arrival at Phuket Airport, meet your driver for a private transfer to your beach hotel. Check-in and rest of the day at leisure.
Day 2. Phuket Town Culture Walk and Wildlife Discovery(B/L/-)
This morning you will be picked up from your hotel at 06.30 for your Cultural Walk and transferred to On On Hotel, Phuket town. The Discovery walk is all about learning the local lifestyle so we visit a local shrine and pay respect to the spirits, then visit the "oldest herb shop" in town and learn about traditional medicine using, of course, herbs. We also walk along the historic Chinese shop houses in the beautiful streets of Thalang and Soi Romanee, and visit the old style barber hair dressing shops. Food has to be present too, so we will try the Muslim influenced roti, and some Chinese food as well brought here by the Hokkien immigrants in the 19th century.
Some sections of Phuket town look right back from the mid 50's, the printing shops, the old sarong and cloth Indian sellers on Thalang, the hardware stores, there is a nostalgic feeling about town that you should experience before modern times sweep all that away.
Next, we will make a stop for a fascinating immersion into wildlife and preservation. Located on the northeast corner of Phuket, the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park is the last rain forest refuge on the island. A couple of hundred years ago there used to be tigers, wild elephants and gibbons roaming the forests around the island. Starting with the Chinese migration to work the tin mines in the 19th century, to the steady increase in human habitation since that time, the forests have been slowly depleted until nowadays, the one patch of jungle that survives is Khao Phra Thaeo. Inside the national park there is a short hike to a scenic waterfall. However, another important resource of the park is the gibbon project. The aim of this project is to rescue and rehabilitate gibbons that have been exploited in the tourism industry. The gibbon project wants to rescue these animals from mistreatment, abuse and an early demise. Through a very slow process they can be re-introduced back into the rain forest. It can take years to teach the gibbons how to survive in the wild. With the dedicated efforts of volunteers, there have been many gibbons successfully returned to their native rain forest habitat in Khao Phra Thaeo National Park. It’s an eye opening experience and a great place to educate people on wildlife preservation. Travelers have a chance to make donations to benefit this project.
Transfer back to your hotel by mid-afternoon with the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 3. Phang Nga Bay (B/L/D)
Morning is free at leisure. Depart Phuket at midday for a tour of the breathtaking scenery of Phang Nga Bay by sea canoe. Enjoy a light lunch onboard the parent ship before arriving at the bay and deploying to the sea canoes. Spend the afternoon exploring the bay and several sea caves by canoe, and discover the unique wildlife within them. Enjoy dinner back on board as we savour a spectacular sunset over Phang Nga Bay. Once darkness falls, the very special “Hong by Starlight” tour begins. Board the Krathong —a traditional lotus-shaped floating vessel made of banana leaves— and watch as the phosphorescence from millions of plankton swirls in the water. Return to Phuket at 21.00 and transfer back to your hotel.
