Rice Terraces and Ethnic Hill Tribes

Hiking in the most remote part of the Sapa area equals real adventure and great opportunities to explore the natural life of ethnic minority groups living in the mountains. The locals will look with big eyes and followed by happy smiles as this is “off the beaten track”. Along the trail you will meet several different tribes, each with own language and costumes. Stay overnight in a remote village in comfortable riverside house.

Day 1. Hanoi - Lao Cai (-/-/-)

In the evening, transfer to the train station where you will board the overnight train bound for Lao Cai.

Day 2. Lao Cai - Sapa (B/L/D)

Arrive early in the morning in Lao Cai and transfer to Sapa. You will enjoy breakfast in a nice local restaurant.

You are soon on your way into the most remote part of Hoang Lien National Park, driving downhill to the starting point of your trek in the Tay minority village of Thanh Phu. The hike is through rice paddy terraces, hill sides and you have many opportunities to enjoy magnificent views and encounter animals such as water buffalos, mountain goats or pigs, which belong to the nearby Tay and Red Dao minorities.

When you pass by a new village you will realize that you are “off the beaten track”, as the local people are looking interested and happy. All along the trail you will have a beautiful view towards the Hoang Lien mountain range and some of the biggest rice fields in the Sapa area. Your picnic lunch is served in beautiful surroundings. After lunch you will pass by one of a few colourful Black Hmong villages in the area. Soon the walk ends in the small and remote Red Dao minority village of Nam Cang.

You will be welcomed to a charming Riverside House, situated few meters aside the river with own suspended bridge and with the jungle close by. The house is owned by a local Red Dao family and built into an exclusive lodge to provide a comfortable and peaceful stay.

The afternoon is perfect for exploring the quiet village or a swim in the river.

Day 3. Sapa - Trekking along Rivers and Remote Hillsides (B/L/-)

You will wake up to the sound of the river and maybe happy minority kids swimming near the house. And possibly you would like your breakfast served at the river-front verandah, gifted with a beautiful morning view.

Today your hike will take you higher up in the mountains, the trails are only used by local farmers and you will need to cross a few rivers before visiting the very remote Red Dao village of Nam Ngan. You will visit a local house and see the living conditions in the remote mountains, maybe you will be served a cup of tea or an optional rice wine as hospitality is important to all here. Now the trail will decent into a bigger path and soon you will be arriving at the village of one of the smallest tribes in this area, the Xa Pho minority. After a local lunch you will end your remote hike near the beautiful Muong Bo River and here your car will be waiting for your for your transfer back to Sapa.

Check in at your hotel in Sapa. Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 4. Sapa - Lao Cai (B/-/-)

Breakfast at the hotel. sToday is for you to relax, go shopping or make some easy exploration of Sapa’s surrounding villages to indulge in the atmosphere of a formerly French colonial hill station.

In the late afternoon, transfer to Lao Cai to board the night train to Ha Noi.

Overnight on the train (shared 4 berth-cabin in local train).

Day 5. Hanoi (-/-/-)

Early arrival in Hanoi around 5.30 am.
